Little Caesars Pizza Fundraiser – Troop 422

Scouts,

I hope you are selling lots of pizza kits. Remember, for every kit you sell you’ll receive $5 into your scout account. I must have all order forms turned in to me by February 22. Our last regular troop meeting is February 13. The PLC meeting is on February 20. You may turn in orders either of these dates or email to me before the 22nd. Pizza pickup will be on Thursday, March 1, at First Presbyterian Church of Smyrna, 540 Sam Ridley Parkway West, across from Jim ‘n Nick’s BBQ between the hours of 5:30 and 7:00. I must have all money collected by February 27, which is Court of Honor night. Thanks and good luck!

Scouting for Food Reminder

This Saturday our Troop will be working at the Smyrna Food Bank from 10-2pm (or until needed). We will be working outside as well as in, so please dress accordingly. Our Troop will not be the only Troop/Pack dropping off collected food. I don’t know if any other Troop will be working @ the Food Bank to help count or shelf the collected goods. You may want to pack a drink and snack.

If you haven’t already, please deliver your flyers ( print off more as needed). Wear Class A and follow safe scouting.

Eagle Scout Nick Fowler Earns Honors at The Naval Academy

Midshipman Nick Fowler, an Eagle Scout and alumnus of Troop 422, has been listed on The Naval Academy’s Superintendent’s List for his performance during the fall semester. To earn this achievement, Nick had to meet the following requirements:

have an SQPR of at least 3.4 with no grade of D, F, or I in any course
an A in Conduct
an A in Military Performance
an A or B in Physical Education and A or B in Physical Readiness Test

Nick is the son of Tom and Lisa Fowler. While a scout with Troop 422, Nick served as Senior Patrol Leader. For his Eagle project, he built an outdoor classroom for Cedar Grove Elementary School, and earned his Eagle badge on October 19, 2006. Nick’s younger brother Matt Fowler is also an Eagle Scout.

According to his mother, Nick got to choose his roommates after his freshmen year. He has two roommates and both of them are Eagle Scouts. There is an “Eagle Club” at the Academy. Nick does not get to participate often because he is on the rowing team, but he has given Scout Tours and participated in other functions. He was also glad he knew all of the scout knots when he arrived at the Academy!

Mrs. Fowler also shared a lesson Nick learned from the academy. ”Nick also found out how important being a Boy Scout is. He met someone from New Jersey or New York (I can’t remember) who really wanted to get into the Academy. It requires a nomination from your Congressman or Senator. When the guy went for his interview he was asked, “Have you ever been a Boy Scout.” When he replied “no,” he was told “Have a nice day.” They would not even consider him for a nomination. I think since Nick has grown he has really come to understand the importance of being a Boy Scout.”

Eagle Scout Chris Aultman Makes Dean’s List at The Citadel

Eagle Scout Christopher Aultman, a scout alumnus with Troop 422, has been named to the dean’s list at The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, for his academic work in the fall of 2011. While a member of Troop 422, Chris served in several positions, including Senior Patrol Leader. He earned his Eagle badge on October 10, 2007.

Chris is the son of Terry and Pam Zimmerman, and the brother of another troop alumnus, Eagle Scout Jason Aultman.

2012 Calendar Planning Meeting

Leaders/Parents,

I just wanted to remind everyone that we will be planning the 2012 calendar on Sunday, January 8 from 2:00 until 4:00 at the Florence Church of Christ off Old Nashville Hwy. We need as many to be there as possible. I will send out a reminder after the holidays so please save that date on your calendar. Thanks and have a Merry Christmas!

Troop 422

Winter Camp 2011 Information

We will meet at Gilsville @ 11:30 AM on Tuesday, Dec 27 to transport to Boxwell. Closing campfire is 7:30 PM Friday. Winter Camp for T422 ends with the campfire at 8:30 PM. Parents are welcome to attend the campfire when picking up your Scout. In fact, parents are always welcome to visit anytime during camp. If you would like to join us for a meal, you can buy a meal ticket at the Cripple Crab when you sign in for the visit.

We take our own tents for this event. Scouts are free to chose their own tent buddy.

Prepare for potentially harsh Winter weather. It is important that you are prepared to stay warm and dry. Hiking boots and hiking socks, wool or synthetic, are needed. A warm sleeping bag rated at 15 degrees or colder is recommended. An insulating pad is needed to go beneath the sleeping bag.

It is best to dress in layers that can be removed and added during the day. Bring a warm hat. Don’t forget rain gear. Lightly insulated nylon pants, ski pants, are suggested.

Cotton socks, sneakers and blue jeans tend to get wet and stay wet for days, making the camper cold and miserable in harsh, cold weather.

Restrooms are heated, kinda, and hot water is available for showers, usually.

Hot Hands chemical hand warmers are beneficial.

Introduction to Leadership Skills for the Troop

Junior leader training, now called Introduction to Leadership Skills for the Troop (ILST), will be held this Saturday, Nov 19, starting at 8:00 a.m., at Florence Church of Christ, 6732 Old Nashville Hwy, Smyrna — in the big building behind the church.

ILST is a very important Boy Scout training that all Scouts should go through at least once, and which they can take over again to gain more leadership know-how. It’s a training course that any Scout needs, to learn how to be a strong leader in the troop. Scoutmaster Charles King will teach the class, which is designed to instruct Scouts on the duties required of all troop and patrol officers. Every Scout should make an effort to attend ILST this Saturday, and find out how he can serve well in any of the troop’s leadership positions. Don’t miss this chance to become a most excellent leader of your fellow Scouts!

Adult troop leaders are also encouraged to attend if possible, to assist Mr. King in providing this vital training experience.

Training is over at 11:30 a.m. Parents picking up are asked to arrive by 11:30, when all Scouts will be ready to leave promptly.
