Scoutmaster’s Minute May edition

A Scout is helpful.

BSA definition – He willingly volunteers to help others without expecting payment or reward.

This weekend our Troop had two different service projects going on at the same time. One was the beginning stages of an Eagle project, the other was simply for service in the community. We had 17 scouts and 4 adults at the community project. The Eagle project had 4 scouts and 6 adults. Together these projects totaled 214 of hours given in our community to improve it in some way.

Time is arguably one of the most valuable commodities we have. Seeing our Scouts and Adult Volunteers freely give their time to these projects is inspiring. I believe these acts show us the character of our Troop and reinforce the core values of scouting.

Operating a Troop of this size requires many adult volunteers. We have many serving already, and are always in need of more. Although they do not always get mentioned, or recognized for their service to scouting, the time they invest is every bit as important as the service projects the Scouts complete.

In close, thank you to our scouts for setting an example for others to follow by your willingness to serve, and thank you to our adults , who make it all possible. I look forward to where our trek will take us, and hope we all remember to enjoy ourselves along the way.

Our scouts sold 434 camp cards totaling $2170.00. Half, $1085.00 goes directly into the selling scout’s account. We will announce the three top sellers at Court of Honor next week. Job well done gentlemen.

New Troop Guidebook/Bylaws Published

The new revised Guidebook/Bylaws is now available on the site. From the Documents link in the top menu, it is the one titled “Troop 422 Guide Book – April 2012 (PDF)“.

Please print off the very first page of the new bylaws, sign and date it, and bring it to the next troop meeting. Every Scout needs to do this, no matter how long you have been with the troop.

10 Mile Bike Ride Hosted by Cobra Patrol

The Cobra patrol hosted a 10 mile bike ride on 4-24-12 at Sharp Springs Park. We met at 5:00 and reviewed bike safety requirements for the bike merit badge. We rode the Smyrna Greenway Trail to the McDonalds on N.Lowry St. and back to the park,completing another 10 mile requirement. Its not to late to join us on the next ride.

Scoutmaster’s Minute

Welcome to the inaugural edition of the Scoutmaster’s Minute. The intent of this publication is to bring the Parents and the Troop Committee “up to speed;” with what’s going on in the Troop and PLC. It is my intent to produce a publication at minimum quarterly, if not monthly.
A Scout is Reverent each in his own way.
I wanted to share with you some recent events. As some of you may know, our Troop table tops are getting in rough shape. I went to the Home Depot in Smyrna and asked for a donation of materials to replace the tops. Without batting an eye, the store manager told me to get what was needed. This is a relatively small donation in the grand scheme of things, just under a $100.
Winter Camporee had the best participation in a camping outing since Summer Camp 2011. Just under half the Troop attended the alternate backpack trip.
We have 2 to as many as 5 Cub Scouts coming to our Troop from Pack 1001. We have 5 new scouts from Pack 54. . One has even made the decision to drive from Donelson to attend Troop 422. Four are already registered for Summer Camp. Four new scouts are joining from Pack 432 and also have registered for Summer Camp.
There are a number of other good things going on in Patrols. Scouts are learning to lead and take on responsibility. They are also developing teaching skills. Troop Leadership is developing.
With these events in mind, I can’t help but believe God is blessing our Troop. I pray that our Scouts receive His blessings and learn to walk the straight and narrow. “Scouts are reverent….”. I ask each of you to pray for, or to continue praying for our Scouts. They all face a great number of challenges in our world today. Also remember the adult leaders in the Troop that they continue to set a good example for our Scouts.
In close, thank you all for your dedication to scouting. I look forward to where our journey will take us and hope we all remember to enjoy ourselves along the way.

Beaver Day @ Boxwell

April 13-15 our troop participated in Beaver Day at Camp Boxwell in Gallatin ,Tn. We delivered picnic tables to Stahlman and Craig camp sites. We also mulched the Pirates Cove and Fort at Cub World At the end of the day we had a chance to go on a sail boat, thanks to the Sea Scouts. After dinner we had a campfire and each patrol did skits for each other. In addition we built another campfire and retired several American flags.
